Current Favourite sites
The interweb is full of rubbish. But here and there can be sound spaces of real quality. These are some of my favourite website.
spEak You're bRanes "offers "a collection of ignorance, narcissism, stupidity, hypocrisy and bad grammar". All of the material is taken from the BBC's Have Your Say website, which seems to have become the repository of the bile of our moronic underbelly.
Counterknowledge is a great site, based on an equally good book of the same title. It "draws attention to every kind of bogus theory, whether it emanates from
maverick scientists, Christian evangelists, media nutritionists, Muslim
scholars or "alternative" historians".
Another brillaint book is Bad Science. If anything, the website of the same name is even better. If you need to be outraged by some quack or con-merchant, this is the place to go: the 'danger' of the MMR vaccine; vitamin miracle cures; brain gym; homeopathy. It is all here, and exposed for the nonsense they are.
I don't know much about poetry, but I know what I like: Tim Minchin. My favourites are 'Storm' and 'If you open your mind too much your brain will fall out (take my wife)'. I've bought my tickets for his tour of the UK. Genius.
Favourite Journals
There are hundreds of journals focusing on sport and/or education. These are the ones that I read most regularly.
Sport, Education and Society "is an international journal which provides a focal point for the
publication of social science research on pedagogy, policy and the body
in society..." Some of the most important and interesting papers in the field have come out in SES. It is certainly worth checking its content regularly.
Leisure Studies "publishes articles of a high standard on all aspects of leisure studies
and from a variety of disciplinary bases, including sociology,
psychology, human geography, planning, economics." One of the real virtues of this journal is its diversity and eclecticism.
Journal of Philosophy of Education is the most established journal reporting philosophical thinking in education.
Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy "promotes the communication of educational research in physical education and youth sport and related fields such as teacher and coach education", and is the official journal of the Association for Physical Education.
Philosophy of Sport is the top journal on philosophical inquiry in sport.
Sport, Ethics and Philosophy is a relatively recent addition, the official journal of the British Philosophy of Sport Association. Well worth a look.
HERE IS A LIST OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT JOURNALS THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL
