I make a living writing, researching and talking about sport, learning,  expertise and related areas.

My company - RBES Ltd - has carried out research and consultancy on behalf of a wide range of clients, including Nike, Unilever, Professional Golfers Asscociation, UNESCO and various agencies of the UK Government.

I used to be a senior academic, and was a Professor at Canterbury, Roehampton and Birmingham Universities. Before that, I was a school teacher and a sports coach.

Some examples of recent projects are:

  • Sport England - ‘Space for Sport and the Arts’
  • UK Sport - ‘Drug-free sport: anti-doping values and attitudes of elite performers’
  • Department for Education and Skills - ‘EPPI Systematic Review of Gifted and Talented Education’

One of the great things about my work is that I get to learn all sorts of fascinating things.  Recently, I have been learning to speak Italian (at Centro Fiorenza), sketching (with Mike Wiesmeier), and magic (with Davenport's).

I've been a long-term student and teacher of the martial arts.  I have Black Belts in four different systems, and was a successful competitor in Karate, Ju Jitsu, Kick Boxing and Thai Boxing. I was, at one time, the No. 1 Light Heavyweight Thai Boxer in the UK.  A little claim to fame was that I fought (and survived) against the high-

rated British boxer Julius Francis, who went on the fight someone called Mike Tyson.

I am now associated with the great Invicta Gym in Kent.

Richard Bailey is one of the very few leaders in the field who can capture the hearts and minds of teachers wanting to make a difference.  A consumate professional as a speaker, writer and CPD deliverer, Richard really does lead the way. (Dr David Morley, Director of Education, Education and Special Projects Ltd.)

I really enjoy listening to Richard speak ... You feel that you are listening to a man who has been there and actually walked the walk and developed his ideas from practical experience ... If you ever get the chance to hear Richard speak I would thoroughly recommend it. (Ian Stainger, Development Officer, Learning and Teaching Scotland)
